What Exactly Are Cherry Turnovers?

Cherry Turnovers are a beloved baked treat featuring flaky puff pastry filled with a sweet and tangy cherry sauce. While they make for a delightful dessert, they’re also perfect for breakfast. (Feel free to debate this, but since puff pastry is made with flour, butter, and sometimes eggs ingredients similar to pancakes.it’s hard to argue against it.)

Ingredients For Cherry Turnovers

This dessert is a true winner, requiring minimal effort for maximum deliciousness. You simply fold ready-made dough over the filling (which can also be store-bought), seal it up, bake until golden brown, and drizzle with a sugar glaze. Easy as that heaven on a plate. Here’s what you need to make my simple Cherry Turnovers:

  • Cherry Filling: I typically use canned cherry filling. Is it the best or the cheapest option compared to my homemade Cherry Sauce? Not really. But it’s super convenient, and sometimes convenience wins out. If you have a few extra minutes, though, I highly recommend trying my Cherry Sauce recipe.
  • Puff Pastry Sheets: This ready-made dough features buttery layers that crisp up beautifully when baked, creating that satisfying shatter characteristic of flaky pastries.
  • Egg:Beaten egg is used to seal the seams of the folded dough and brushed on top for a golden, glossy finish. You can skip it if you want; the golden look is mainly for aesthetics. Water or milk can also seal the dough, but they might not hold as well, so keep that in mind.
  • Powdered Sugar:This is the base for our sugar glaze. If you don’t have powdered sugar, you can sprinkle granulated sugar on the pastries after brushing with egg for a sweet finish. You can even skip the glaze altogether, and these pastries will still be amazing. I promise!
  • Milk:This ingredient helps create a glaze from the powdered sugar. You can substitute water, but the glaze won’t be as creamy.
