Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix Dough: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, 1 egg, and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape Bagels: Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape. Stretch the hole slightly to ensure it doesn’t close during baking.
  6. Boil Bagels: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil each bagel for 1-2 minutes on each side. This step gives bagels their chewy texture.
  7. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  8. Egg Wash: Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle with desired toppings.
  9. Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Cool and Enjoy: Let the bagels cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy with cream cheese, avocado, or your favorite toppings!
